Wenetta Childs exhibit at City Hall

- Anyone who’s driven through the main intersection in Solana Beach (Coast Highway and Lomas Santa Fe) has probably seen the beautiful copper enamel “sunburst” fountain on the west side, near Fletcher Cove. (The fountain was recently illuminated to give it the attention it deserves.) That piece was created by Wenetta Childs, one of the most influential residents of Solana Beach during the last half of the 20th Century. In addition to beautifying this seaside community, she was a respected artist who worked in several media, including sculpture, painting and copper enamel.
I recently had the pleasure of seeing her selected works on exhibit at the Solana Beach City Hall, where the lobby doubles as an art gallery. It was an impressive display, highlighting the humanity, versatility and talent of this “favorite citizen.” It would be great to see her sculptures, in particular, go on permanent display in a local museum, library, or other public place where they can be properly lighted, showcased and truly appreciated by all.
