City's Private Security Service Targets Trouble Spots
by Solana Beach Scuttlebutt | Publication Date: April 8, 2010
Here in Solana Beach, our law enforcement comes from the San Diego County Sheriff's Department (through the Encinitas Sheriff's Station). Under a negotiated contract, we pay them to come here and keep us safe. But the sheriffs can't be everyone at once, and places like Fletcher Cove and La Colonia Park can become easy targets for graffiti, vandalism and other problems.
To add a layer of protection, the City has experimented with hiring a private security service in recent years. Although the patrol was initially limited to Saturday and Sunday nights during the summer months, the impact was immediate, and crimes decreased in these areas. But when the patrol was canceled, problems returned - especially after 10:00 pm when the parks are closed.
Next week (4/14/10), the City Council will review options for renewing the private security service, and possibly expanding it from summer-only patrols to year-round service ...

Authorities: 13 cited in taxi, limo crackdown
by North County Times | Publication Date: February 14, 2010
Law enforcement officers cited 13 taxi and limousine drivers Friday night and Saturday morning in a coastal city crackdown prompted by complaints from law-abiding cab and limo drivers, a San Diego sheriff's deputy said Saturday.
Four other drivers were given warnings during the crackdown, which ran from 11 p.m to 3 a.m. in Encinitas, Solana Beach and Del Mar, Deputy David DiCarlo said in a press release.
The multi-agency crackdown included officials from the California Public Utilities Commission and a Solana Beach code enforcement officer, he said.
The operation also netted one person suspected of drunken driving and another person thought to have been drunk in public, DiCarlo said.

Questions Surround Solana Beach Slaying
by NBCSanDiego.com | Publication Date: January 27, 2010
By CHRIS CHAN and ERIC S. PAGE, NBCSanDiego.com
The victim of a Solana Beach homicide has been ID'd, but little else is known about the case.
The body was discovered Monday in a home on Santa Florencia by a concerned co-worker. Since then, investigators with the sheriff's department have identified the woman as Sherry Chang, 60, but have released little other information about the case. Sources, however, have told NBCSanDiego that investigators are looking for the victim's son Bryan Chang, who they said is a person of interest in connection to the case.
In a sign that the case may be moving forward, a K-9 unit from the sheriff's department was sent to the crime scene on Wednesday. It's unclear exactly what the deputies were looking for, but they did spend a lot of time at the home and outside a nearby house. It did not appear that they removed anything from Chang's home during the investigation Wednesday.
Neighbors said Chang lived alone and that they saw her on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. when she went out for a walk. They also said they saw her arrive on Friday accompanied by another person, but they were unable to provide any other details about Chang's passenger. The neighbors also said that the co-worker who found the body told them he was shocked that Chang was with anybody on Friday.
Chang was a wealthy frugal woman, neighbors told NBCSandiego. They also said she was scheduled to fly to Taiwan to visit her mother and other family members next week.

Robber hits Solana Beach bank
by North County Times | Publication Date: January 12, 2010
SOLANA BEACH ---- A man robbed a Solana Beach bank by demanding money from a teller early Tuesday evening, a sheriff's lieutenant said.
The robbery happened about 5:30 p.m. at the Bank of America at 405 South Coast Highway 101, Lt. Mike Munsey said. The robber, who had his face hidden with something, did not appear to have a weapon, Munsey said.
After getting an unknown amount of money from the teller, the thief was last seen leaving on foot, the lieutenant said. A sheriff's helicopter assisted in a search of the area, but deputies located no suspect.
