The Broken Record Award: UT Editorial Staff Can’t Move the Needle

Maybe it was just a slow weekend for news. The summer heat wave and Labor Day lethargy sent droves of people to the beaches (including Solana Beach). So why should the Union-Tribune editorial staff bother to research and cover a new topic, when they could just
rehash a previous piece and take the day off?

Trouble is, they’ve rerun the same piece (in slightly varied forms) at least SIX times this year. What’s got them so hot and bothered? It’s the “stalled” progress on the Cedros Crossing project. Even though an ad hoc committee is hard at work reviewing alternative designs and possible mitigation measures for this immense project … and even though (as the UT reported), a major change was made to the project just last week … and even though hundreds of Solana Beach residents have objected to the project … the UT continues to pin the “blame” on a few City Council members.

Perhaps the UT could have devoted a few column-inches to the Friday night “clarification” that was issued by Shea Properties developer Greg Shannon, who had grossly misrepresented several facts in a press release last week. That statement was covered by the North County Times, but never reported in the U-T.

Regardless of where they stand on the Cedros Crossing project, Solana Beach residents are tired of hearing the same old song from this newspaper. Their tired arguments are no longer persuasive – just annoying.
